St Giles Connects With the Community at the 2026 Harare Agricultural Show

St Giles Medical Rehabilitation Centre joined organisations, businesses and members of the public at the 2026 Harare Agricultural Show, using the annual event as an opportunity to raise awareness about rehabilitation, mobility, wellness and independent living.

The Harare Agricultural Show brings together thousands of visitors from across Zimbabwe and provides organisations from different sectors with an opportunity to showcase their work and engage directly with the public.

For St Giles, the Show provided something particularly valuable: an opportunity to take conversations about rehabilitation and wellbeing beyond the walls of the rehabilitation centre and directly into the community.

Bringing Rehabilitation Closer to the Public

Many people only encounter rehabilitation services after they or someone close to them experiences an injury, illness or disability.

Yet rehabilitation covers a much wider range of needs than many people realise.

Throughout the Show, the St Giles team engaged visitors about the role rehabilitation can play in helping people improve function, manage disability, regain skills and maintain greater independence in everyday life.

Visitors were also able to learn more about the different services and support available through St Giles.

These conversations provided an opportunity to answer questions, challenge misconceptions and help more people understand when rehabilitation may be appropriate for themselves or their loved ones.

Wellness Assessments at the St Giles Stand

Our stand wasn’t only about information.

Visitors also had the opportunity to participate in basic wellness assessments, including blood pressure checks, while interacting directly with members of the St Giles team.

These simple assessments created an opportunity to encourage greater awareness of personal health and the importance of routine health monitoring.

They also opened up wider conversations about prevention, recovery and maintaining health and independence throughout life.

Showcasing Mobility and Independent Living

Another important part of the St Giles exhibition was raising awareness about mobility aids and assistive equipment.

For someone experiencing reduced mobility, the appropriate equipment can make everyday activities safer and more manageable.

Mobility and assistive products can include wheelchairs, walking aids, bathroom safety equipment, orthopaedic supports and other devices designed to help people function more independently.

At the Show, visitors were able to learn more about these solutions and how the appropriate mobility aid can support rehabilitation, safety and participation in everyday life.

The message is an important one:

Using additional support does not necessarily mean losing independence. In many situations, the right support is exactly what makes greater independence possible.

More Than an Exhibition

Participating in the Harare Agricultural Show also gave the St Giles team an opportunity to interact with people who may never previously have visited a rehabilitation centre.

Healthcare education is most effective when information reaches people before they desperately need it.

Someone who learns about physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy or mobility support today may remember that information when a parent experiences a stroke, when a family member is injured, when a child requires developmental support or when their own mobility begins to change.

That makes public engagement an important part of our work.

Taking the St Giles Mission Into the Community

At St Giles, rehabilitation is ultimately about function, participation and independence.

Our work is centred on helping people achieve the greatest level of independence possible, whether they are recovering from an injury, adapting after illness or living with a long-term condition or disability.

Events such as the Harare Agricultural Show give us an opportunity to take that message to a much broader audience.

They allow us to meet people, listen to their questions and demonstrate that rehabilitation is not simply something that happens inside a therapy room.

It is about helping people return to the activities that matter to them.
